Abstract
The former Seodaemun Prison in Seoul is the first modern prison built in 1908 and has been built more than 100 years ago. It has been repaired and renovated for the use until after liberation, resulting in significant damage or structural problems. Former Seodaemun Prison is conducting projects to recover the functions and preserve the original form of the building, but there were no academic research on the entire modern architectural characteristics of the Seodaemun Prison and Prison architecture. This study is about the structural characteristics and materials of the Seodaemun prison and it is aiming to restore the historical values of the monument through restoration and maintenance suggesting the design and construction methodology in order to extend the existence of architectural heritage for both conservation and promotion.
서울 구 서대문형무소는 1908년 건축된 최초의 근대식 감옥으로 건축된 지 100여 년이 지난 건축물로 내구성 저하와 함께, 해방 이후까지 운영되면서 보수, 개조가 진행되어 본래의 모습이 상당부분 훼손되거나 구조적인 문제가 발생하고 있다. 서대문형무소는 기능을 회복하고 원형을 보존하기 위한 복원사업을 진행하고 있으나 근대건축물 전반에 대한 개괄적인 건축구조연구는 있었으나, 아직 서대문형무소와 감옥건축의 건축적 특성에 대한 학술적 연구가 없었다. 본 연구는 서대문형무소의 구조적 특징과 재료에 대한 연구이며, 이는 서대문형무소의 역사성과 가치를 회복하기 위한 복원・정비사업을 진행하는 데 있어 설계・시공의 지침을 마련하고 문화재건축물의 수명연장과 보존, 전시・활용방안을 도출하는데 기여하고자 한다.
